KW02: Study Smart: Insights from the science of effective learning

-    Problem/Learning goal:  Do you ever feel your students’ self-study could be more efficient or effective? Do you sometimes doubt whether your students are using the right learning strategies? Over the two decades, research from educational psychology has led to robust insights into what learning strategies lead to the best study results. This research also shows that 60-90% of students regularly apply ineffective strategies (such as highlighting). In this workshop, we will dive into the science of effective learning and show what strategies work best and why. We will also address novel, effective learning strategies. Finally, change is never easy. We discuss how to help students change on the road to more effective learning strategies, including a training developed at Maastricht University.

-    Approach: This workshop will start with a introductory presentation on the science of effective learning strategies. Then, participants are challenged to discuss whether and if so, how this can be applied to their teaching and/or learning context. Finally, we will look into specifics of a training program and pilot results of a learning strategy training developed at Maastricht University.

-    Who should participate? Any educator interested in the self-directed learning behaviour of his/her students, and thinking about ways to influence these.

Any educator interested in the science of learning, and wishing to be updated on recent insights.

-    Prepare/Bring to Workshop: Nothing more than some fresh energy to think about and contribute to student’ self-directed learning strategies.
